Basic Equipment
A reference for Weapons, Protective Equipment, Travel Gear, and Tools. Use the items listed in the starting Inventory tables, 7d6, to determine starting equipment; not every item in this reference is part of the starting package.
An ordinary item occupies 1 Inventory Slot, a Bulky item 2, and a Petty item 0, unless the item specifies otherwise. Worn equipment counts toward the total limit of 10 slots. A Bag holds up to 6 of these 10 slots; it does not add slots. With all 10 slots occupied, current HP is 0; maximum HP is unchanged.
Weapons
| Weapon | Damage | Inventory Slots | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortbow + quiver of arrows | d6 | 2 | Single Bulky set |
| Spear | d8 | 1 | — |
| Axe | d8 | 1 | Ordinary axe, not a Bulky weapon |
| Dagger | d6 | 1 | — |
| Cudgel | d6 | 1 | — |
| Sabre | d8 | 1 | — |
| Qamshy (whip) | d4 | 1 | No additional combat properties |
A composite bow with a quiver uses the shortbow's statistics:
d6, 2 slots, one Bulky set. Composite construction grants no separate bonus.
A qamshy (whip) is an ordinary item occupying 1 slot and dealing d4 Damage.
The whip itself does not make an Attack Impaired or grant Blast,
disarming, or other special properties.
A weapon's damage die is a property of the weapon. Record it alongside the item's name; no separate roll is needed to determine it during character creation. When Attacking, use the Combat rules.
Protective Equipment
| Item | Armor | Inventory Slots | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shield | +1 | 1 | Protects while held and used |
| Helmet | +1 | 1 | Protects while worn |
| Gambeson | +1 | 1 | Protective clothing made of quilted layers |
| Brigandine | 1 | 2 | Bulky |
| Chainmail | 2 | 2 | Bulky |
| Mirror armor | 3 | 2 | Bulky; complete set |
Reading Armor values. A number without + gives the armor
value of the item itself: brigandine 1, chainmail 2, mirror armor 3.
A +1 adds to other applicable Armor. Without other armor, that item
provides Armor 1 on its own; without protective equipment, Armor is 0.
When using just one item, 1 and +1 give the same result.
Examples: a shield alone gives Armor 1; chainmail and a shield give Armor 3; chainmail, a shield, and a helmet still give Armor 3 because that is the overall limit. Items must be worn or used, and their combined use must be possible in the situation. These values reduce Damage; they do not add to Hit Protection (HP).
Brigandine is armor made of metal plates secured to a cloth or leather backing. It provides Armor 1 while worn; carrying it in Inventory does not provide protection.
DAIRN uses the names Берен сауыт / Куяк / Brigandine. This is a mapping for game adaptation, not a claim that the historical terms are fully equivalent. Its statistics come from Cairn 2e — Marketplace, Armor by Yochai Gal: Brigandine, Armor 1, Bulky. A protective equipment roll of 4 grants brigandine.
Shield, helmet, gambeson, and chainmail
Қалқан / Щит / Shield is handheld protection. Дулыға / Шлем / Helmet is protective headgear. Қаттама сауыт / Стёганый доспех / Gambeson is protective clothing made of quilted fabric layers with padding; an ordinary travelling cloak does not have this property. Кіреуке / Кольчуга / Chainmail is armor made of interlinked metal rings.
Their Armor values and Inventory requirements come from
Cairn 2e — Marketplace, Armor
by Yochai Gal. The names are adapted for DAIRN.
All six protective equipment entries are available in this reference;
the starting Inventory 7d6 table grants one of them with a separate die.
Mirror armor
Шарайна / Зерцало / Mirror armor are the names of the same equipment entry in DAIRN's language editions.
Historical mirror armor uses large steel plates, slightly curved to fit the body and joined with straps and buckles. In Kazakh tradition, sharaina was generally worn over another suit of armor as additional protection. This description follows K. S. Akhmetzhan's study of Kazakh armor. It is distinct from a complete European suit of plate armor.
In the equipment table, Mirror armor means a complete armor set with mirror plates, including the armor worn underneath. The entire set provides Armor 3, occupies 2 Inventory Slots, and is Bulky. These statistics apply while the set is worn. The underlying armor is already included: do not add its Armor or slots again. An individual plate does not receive the statistics of the whole set.
This adapts the Plate entry from Cairn 2e — Marketplace, Armor by Yochai Gal. The game mapping does not imply historical equivalence of construction or protective performance. A protective equipment roll of 6 grants mirror armor.

Basis of Adaptation
Weapon damage dice are based on Cairn 2e — Marketplace, Weapons by Yochai Gal: bows, daggers, and cudgels use d6; spears, axes, and swords use d8. In DAIRN, the axe corresponds to an ordinary axe, and the sabre to a sword. The number of Inventory Slots each item occupies is unchanged from the current DAIRN starting Inventory table.
